Abstract:

First meeting in a series where PhD students of physics talk about their research. We want to create a friendly atmosphere where the youngest researchers can practice giving a talk about their work. For this reason, seniors are supposed not(!) to attend.

Pablo Antonio Cano will talk about Black holes in Einsteinian cubic gravity

I construct a new higher-order correction to the Einstein-Hilbert action which satisfies the following properties: (1) It only propagates a massless graviton on the vacuum, (2) the Lagrangian is the same in every dimension and (3) it is non-trivial in four dimensions. Since the theory is unitary at the linear level, it is useful as an effective field theory.  Then, I describe black hole solutions of this theory. These black holes are characterized by a single function and represent a UV modification of the Schwarzschild black hole. I give exact formulas for the mass, the temperature and the entropy in function of the horizon radius. The thermodynamics of this new solution are discussed as well as the possible  theoretical and phenomenological applications.

Eduardo García-Valdecasas will talk about Stringy instantons, deformed geometry and axions.

Axion models can be described in terms of a 3-form eating a 2-form dual to the axion. I will discuss how stringy axions can give rise to potentials for the axion in this language, where there is naively no candidate 3-form to eat up. The necessary 3-form will arise when taking into account the backreaction of the instanton in the underlying geometry.
