• New IFT Responde video about Emmy Noether, the woman who changed physics forever.

Emmy Noether changed our understanding of physics forever. Considered one of the most brilliant mathematicians in history, her discoveries established a profound connection between symmetries and the conservation laws of physics. In this video, IFT predoctoral researcher Irene Sánchez recounts the life of Emmy Noether—a woman who had to overcome the prejudices of her time to pursue a career in mathematics—and we explore why her work was so revolutionary. We will explain Noether’s two theorems intuitively and see how the symmetries of nature relate to some of physics’ most fundamental conservation laws, as well as how the distinction between global and local symmetries solved the greatest problem facing General Relativity at the time. What is the relationship between time, space, energy, and the laws of physics? The answer lies with Emmy Noether.
