Abstract: We present a study of the perturbative description of thermally driven electroweak phase transitions (EWPT) in the early universe. Focusing on strong first-order transitions, which are relevant for gravitational wave cosmology, we examine the dimensional reduction as a tool for a precise and systematic description focusing on the running of effective parameters within the effective field theory (EFT), and the impact of higher-dimensional operators. This allows us to assess the range of validity and theoretical uncertainties of the EFT approach. We demonstrate these results with applications to the Standard Model Effective Field Theory (SMEFT) and singlet extensions of the Standard Model, both of which can realize strong EWPT.
