Title: On the radiative decays of quarkonia and why they can be important for searches beyond the Standard Model

Abstract: I argue that the physics of quarkonia can offer fertile ground for searching for the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model at low energies. In this talk I will focus on light, O(GeV), new-physics states that are pseudoscalar bosons. Prominent examples are the CP-odd Higgs, axion-like particles, and even the Majoron. For that research to be phenomenologically viable, it is necessary to have good control over the Standard Model physics. In that respect, current-day lattice QCD is particularly helpful. I focus on a few radiative decays of quarkonia and show how they are computed on the lattice. I then discuss the prospects for phenomenology, which crucially depend on the experimental precision that can in fact be reached at the charm factory BESIII and/or the B-factory Belle II.
