SUMMARY:Seminar by Lina Castiblanco: "Forecasting cosmological constraints beyond two-point statistics with One-Point Statistics "
DESCRIPTION:Title: Forecasting cosmological constraints beyond two-point statistics with One-Point Statistics \nSpeaker: Lina Castiblanco \nBio: I am a cosmologist and postdoctoral researcher at Bielefeld University. My research focuses on extracting information about the large-scale structure of the Universe beyond traditional two-point statistics\, particularly through one-point probability distribution functions of weak lensing and galaxy clustering. During my PhD at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso\, I worked on modelling the galaxy bispectrum and topological statistics to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity. \nVenue & Time: Blue Room | 11:00 \nAbstract: Current and next-generation galaxy surveys will provide vast datasets to improve our understanding of the Universe\, once we extract their maximum information content. However\, the late-time matter distribution is non-Gaussian\, limiting the information captured by two-point statistics. To fully exploit the cosmological signal\, it is essential to incorporate beyond-two-point statistics\, such as one-point probability distribution functions (PDFs)\, which capture key non-Gaussian information from both galaxy clustering and weak lensing. In particular\, the weak lensing convergence PDF is sensitive to the physics of the dark Universe\, including dark matter and dark energy. This information is extracted more efficiently by performing a tomographic analysis. Additionally\, a combined analysis of galaxy clustering and weak lensing in a joint PDF offers a powerful way to jointly constrain cosmology and galaxy bias. We also need to consider systematic effects\, such as shape noise\, intrinsic alignments\, photometric redshift errors\, and mass-mapping\, which can lead to biased cosmological parameter estimates if they are neglected or not properly modelled. In the talk\, I will present our theoretical modelling of the tomographic convergence PDF and the joint weak lensing–galaxy clustering PDF\, including these systematic effects\, and show our analyses combining the PDF with standard 2-point correlation functions\, which show that the PDF is a powerful statistic for extracting non-Gaussian information.

SUMMARY:Quantum Info JC: Joint quantum measurements on distant physical systems
DESCRIPTION:Title: Joint quantum measurements on distant physical systems \nVenue & Time: 11:30 / Gray Room 3 \nAbstract: Joint measurements are pivotal in quantum theory\, featuring prominently in key quantum information primitives such as entanglement swapping\, teleportation\, and dense coding. A historically important question has been whether joint measurements can be performed at a distance\, without bringing together the particles to be measured. The original motivation for asking this was understanding whether the measurement process in quantum mechanics is compatible with relativity\, which was already put into question by Landau and Peierls in 1933. However\, its interest is not only fundamental\, since being able to perform joint measurements locally will have a strong impact in the development of protocols for quantum communication and distributed quantum computing. \nIn this talk I will describe a protocol for performing any joint quantum measurement on distant physical systems. It consists on multiple rounds of blind teleportation\, and thus requires of pre-shared entanglement. The amount of rounds needed for localizing a given measurement can be understood as a measure of its complexity. Thus\, we give the first complete classification of joint quantum measurements. I will show that many of the joint measurements that are now routinely studied theoretically and implemented experimentally have low complexity according to this measure. This indicates that there are still many interesting phenomena to discover when it comes to joint quantum measurements.

SUMMARY:SPS Journal Club: "The Gravitational Path Integral and Initial Conditions of the Universe" by Luis Zapata
DESCRIPTION:Strings\, Pheno and the Swampland (SPS) Journal Club. Every Thursday at 12:00 in the Red Room. \n  \nVenue&Time: Red Room / 12:00 \n Speaker: Luis Zapata \nTitle: “The Gravitational Path Integral and Initial Conditions of the Universe” \nAbstract: Tracing the cosmic evolution of the universe backward leads to a regime where any classical and effective description of spacetime and matter is expected to break down. Understanding those initial conditions raises the question whether a UV complete theory of Quantum Gravity can provide a consistent framework describing its initial stages. Despite the significant progress in UV-complete approaches such as String Theory\, a fully satisfactory answer accounting for these cosmological initial conditions remains open. \nIn this talk\, we will explore a bottom-up approach to this question through the Hartle-Hawking no-boundary proposal introduced in the 1980s. This proposal attempts to define the initial quantum state of the universe through a gravitational path integral over geometries satisfying suitable boundary conditions. We will review the basic ideas\, placing particular emphasis on implications for inflationary initial conditions of our universe.

SUMMARY:DIFT Colloquium by Paolo Dini: Can AI Save or Destroy the Planet? The Sustainability Challenge Behind Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Date and time: 15:30h\, Thursday\, 15 October 2026 \nLocation: CFTMAT Auditorium \nSpeaker: Paolo Dini \nAfiliación: Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC/CERCA) \nTitle: “Can AI Save or Destroy the Planet? The Sustainability Challenge Behind Artificial Intelligence” \nAbstract: Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being presented as a powerful enabler of sustainability. From climate change mitigation and renewable energy integration to environmental monitoring\, waste management\, water conservation\, disaster response\, and pollution control\, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to support more sustainable and resilient societies. \nHowever\, the rapid expansion of AI also raises critical questions. What are the environmental implications of having virtually unlimited computational power at our disposal? What is the real impact of AI on energy production and consumption? Can the benefits of AI outweigh the growing demand for data centers\, computing infrastructure\, and digital resources? And what technological and organizational foundations are needed to ensure that AI itself remains sustainable? \nThis talk will explore the dual role of AI as both a tool for sustainability and a source of environmental and societal challenges. It will examine the energy\, infrastructure\, and resource requirements behind modern AI systems\, discuss emerging approaches for reducing their environmental footprint\, and reflect on how research\, industry\, and policy can contribute to the development of truly sustainable AI. \nCoffee: 16:30 / Ground-floor cafeteria
