SUMMARY:SPS Journal Club: “Applications of categorical symmetries in two dimensions”
DESCRIPTION:Strings\, Pheno and the Swampland (SPS) Journal Club. Every Thursday at 12:00 in the Red Room. \nTitle: “Applications of categorical symmetries in two dimensions” \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 12:00 \n Speaker: \nAbstract: The goal of this talk is to give a quick overview of some of my recent work during the last years. I will begin with a lightning review of what generalised symmetries are and why it might be sensible\nto relax the group multiplication structure. I will then discuss two applications: \n1) In Non Linear Sigma Models\, the presence of such symmetries protects some of the coupling constants from receiving any quantum corrections. From a target space point of view\, this means some of the parameters of the background cannot receive \alpha’ corrections. \n2) In systems of free chiral fermions\, they give rise to the phenomenon of ‘twisted scattering’ (an incoming local operator that gets scattered into a point operator attached to a topological line)\, which help explain some long standing puzzles of the fermion-monopole scattering problem.

SUMMARY:Seminar by E. Dimastrogiovanni: "Probing the Early Universe with Gravitational Wave Anisotropies"
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Probing the Early Universe with Gravitational Wave Anisotropies” \nSpeaker: E. Dimastrogiovanni (Groningen) \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 15:00 \nAbstract: Gravitational-wave astronomy is opening a new window onto the Universe. Beyond the signals from individual events\, such as merging black holes\, we are beginning to uncover a background of gravitational waves that may carry traces of the very early Universe. Many different processes can contribute to this background\, so how can we distinguish between them? Looking only at its strength and frequency dependence may not be enough. In this talk\, I will explore another possibility: investigating the small variations in the gravitational-wave signal across the sky. These anisotropies may help us identify its origins and become a powerful new probe of inflation. I will then discuss how combining the gravitational-wave sky with the cosmic microwave background can help us search for primordial signals that might otherwise remain hidden.

SUMMARY:Old Journal Club by Michelangelo Tartaglia: "Quantized Hall conductivity in two-dimensions"
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Quantized Hall conductivity in two-dimensions” \nSpeaker: Michelangelo Tartaglia \nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 17:00 \nAbstract: It is shown that the quantization of the Hall conductivity of two-dimensional metals which has been observed recently by Klitzing\, Dorda\, and Pepper and by Tsui and Gossard is a consequence of gauge invariance and the existence of a mobility gap. Edge effects are shown to have no influence on the accuracy of quantization. An estimate of the error based on thermal activation of carriers to the mobility edge is suggested.\n \nPodeis encontrar toda la info en: https://inspirehep.net/literature/175567
