SUMMARY:DIFT Colloquium by Izaskun Jimenez-Serra: Towards prebiotic chemistry in the interstellar medium
DESCRIPTION:Date and time: 15:30h (CEST)\, Thursday\, 8 October 2026 \nLocation: CFTMAT Auditorium \nSpeaker: Izaskun Jimenez-Serra \nTitle: Towards prebiotic chemistry in the interstellar medium \nAbstract: In the past decade\, Astrochemistry has witnessed an impressive increase in the number of detections of new molecular species in space. The majority of these detections are related to complex organic molecules (or COMs)\, defined as carbon-based compounds with more than five atoms in their molecular structure.\nInterestingly\, some of these complex organics are of prebiotic interest and\, hence\, they are believed to be involved in the first biochemical processes that led to life.\nRecently\, we have obtained ultra-sensitive\, broadband spectral surveys toward the G+0.693 molecular cloud\, located in the Galactic Center and known to be one of the richest chemical repositories of the Milky Way.\nOur spectral surveys\, carried out with the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m telescopes\, have allowed us to detect nearly 30 new molecular species\, which include precursors of ribonucleotides\, nucleobases\, amino acids\, sugars\, proto-proteins and proto-lipids\, as proposed in theories of the origin of life.\nIn this talk\, I will present all these findings and analyze how chemical complexity builds up in the interstellar medium\, not only in the extreme environment of the Galactic Center\, but also during the initial conditions of Solar-system formation. \nZoom link to follow the colloquium live: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/83905016433?pwd=4HyoWxuBRD1m8b9FvhMlS2bF68ZV0M.1 \nMeeting ID: 839 0501 6433 \nPasscode: 538063

SUMMARY:IFT Colloquium by Mark Srednicki (UC Santa Barbara): "Quantum chaos and the foundations of statistical mechanics"
DESCRIPTION:Coffee: 11:00 / Ground-floor cafeteria \nDate and time: 11:30h\, Wednesday\, 14 October 2026 \nLocation: Blue Room \nSpeaker: Mark Srednicki\, University of California\, Santa Barbara \nTitle: “Quantum chaos and the foundations of statistical mechanics” \nAbstract: Understanding the emergence of the rules of statistical mechanics for an isolated many-body system from an underlying quantum-mechanical microdynamics is a longstanding problem of\nfundamental physics. Concepts from the theory of quantized classically chaotic systems can be used to resolve at least some of the key issues\, and lead to the notion of “eigenstate\nthermalization”: individual energy eigenstates of the system as a whole appear to be states of thermal equilibrium when probed by local (few-body) observables.

SUMMARY:DIFT Colloquium by Paolo Dini: Can AI Save or Destroy the Planet? The Sustainability Challenge Behind Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Date and time: 15:30h\, Thursday\, 15 October 2026 \nLocation: CFTMAT Auditorium \nSpeaker: Paolo Dini \nAfiliación: Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC/CERCA) \nTitle: “Can AI Save or Destroy the Planet? The Sustainability Challenge Behind Artificial Intelligence” \nAbstract: Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being presented as a powerful enabler of sustainability. From climate change mitigation and renewable energy integration to environmental monitoring\, waste management\, water conservation\, disaster response\, and pollution control\, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to support more sustainable and resilient societies. \nHowever\, the rapid expansion of AI also raises critical questions. What are the environmental implications of having virtually unlimited computational power at our disposal? What is the real impact of AI on energy production and consumption? Can the benefits of AI outweigh the growing demand for data centers\, computing infrastructure\, and digital resources? And what technological and organizational foundations are needed to ensure that AI itself remains sustainable? \nThis talk will explore the dual role of AI as both a tool for sustainability and a source of environmental and societal challenges. It will examine the energy\, infrastructure\, and resource requirements behind modern AI systems\, discuss emerging approaches for reducing their environmental footprint\, and reflect on how research\, industry\, and policy can contribute to the development of truly sustainable AI. \nCoffee: 16:30 / Ground-floor cafeteria \nZoom:\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/j/85894121596?pwd=liPBLJZn1SIwUg3NRBapJ9vWpbCgFv.1 \nMeeting ID: 858 9412 1596\nPasscode: 672626

SUMMARY:Seminar by Bethany Anne Suter (Fermilab and IFT): “Dark matter sensitivity projections for all known inorganic materials”
DESCRIPTION:Title: Dark matter sensitivity projections for all known inorganic materials \nSpeaker: Bethany Anne Suter \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 15:00 \nAbstract: In this talk\, I will discuss my work on performing the highest-throughput search and evaluation of inorganic materials that can serve as excellent low-mass dark matter detectors. We use a graph neural network (GNN) based on the GNNOpt architecture to learn and generate dielectric tensors\, loss functions and sensitivity curves for both isotropic and anisotropic materials. Since the only required input for this GNN model is the structure of the unit cell\, this analysis can now be expanded to any known inorganic material\, increasing the number of materials analyzed by over 2 orders of magnitude. We apply this model to all materials available on the Materials Project database and show the results for absorption and scattering between dark matter and electrons. We also extend the GNN to predict anisotropy in the materials and calculate daily modulation in the interaction rates\, which enables sensitivity to the dark matter wind. The training dataset is derived from nearly one thousand DFT-calculated dielectric tensors taken from Materials Project as well as previously calculated loss functions and sensitivity curves. The GNN predicts the output to percent level accuracy with no prior knowledge of DFT and the output obeys the Kramers-Kronig relations and physical sum rules similarly to the original dataset.
