DESCRIPTION:Venue&Time: Blue Room / 15:00 \nCoffee will be served in the cafeteria at 16:15h \nTitle: ‘Black holes\, quantum entanglement\, and the geometry of spacetime’ \nSpeaker: Matthew Headrick (Brandeis & IHES) \nAbstract: Black holes are by far the most entropic objects in the universe\, and their enormous entropy directly connects the macroscopic world governed by general relativity to the Planck scale governed by quantum gravity. It turns out that they are just a piece of a much larger and richer story\, hinting that\, despite the notorious difficulty of quantizing gravity\, quantum mechanics and general relativity are actually two sides of the same coin. I’ll explain these connections\, and along the way try to answer the question: Is Newton’s constant really equal to 1?

DESCRIPTION:Title: Buckets versus pipes: the neutron lifetime puzzle\n\nSpeaker: Benjamin Grinstein\, University of California\, San Diego\n\n\nDate and time: 15:30h (CEST)\, Wednesday\, May 13\, 2026\n\nLocation: CFTMAT Auditorium\n\n\nAbstract: A precise knowledge of the neutron lifetime is important because it serves as a fundamental input for Big Bang Nucleosynthesis (BBN) models\, which predict the primordial abundances of light elements. It also enters in the determination of the Cabibbo mixing angle\, crucial in testing the validity of the CKM theory of quark flavor\, in understanding reactor neutrino detection rates and the behavior of matter in extreme environments like neutron stars. Precise experiments give very precise results\, but the values determined differ by over 1% with high statistical significance depending on the technology used for the experiment. DESCRIPTION:Title: ‘QCD critical point and the predictable randomness of relativistic fluids’ \nSpeaker: Misha A. Stephanov (Illinois U.\, Chicago) \nVenue&Time: 12:00 / Red Room \nAbstract: Quantum Chromodynamics predicts a variety of unusual states of matter in which relativity and quantum many-body physics strongly intertwine. Discovering phase transitions between these extreme forms of matter in a laboratory is an unprecedented task. This is the challenge heavy-ion collision experiments are taking up at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and future facilities. An intriguing open question is the existence and the location of the QCD critical point. Similar critical points are ubiquitous in earthly substances and the associated fluctuation driven phenomena are remarkably universal. Can the QCD critical point be discovered in the heavy-ion collision experiments? It is a nontrivial question in large part because of the importance of the explosive dynamics of the collision. This challenging question is a subject of current research and a major motivation for recent developments in relativistic hydrodynamics. Of particular interest in this context is the dynamics of thermal fluctuations inherent in any system with dissipation.

Even the “simplest” explanations require new\,\ncosmologically dominant energy components with exotic physical properties.\nCurrent and near-future experiments are seeking clues to the origin of\ncosmic acceleration by measuring the history of expansion and structure\ngrowth with sub-percent precision over a wide span of redshift. I will\nreview the observational methods that underpin these measurements\nand assess the current state of play\, with particular attention to recent\nmeasurements from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) which\nsuggest that the properties of dark energy are evolving at a startling rate.\nI will discuss the prospects and challenges for the new generation of\nexperiments — DESI\, the Euclid mission\, the Vera Rubin Observatory\,\nand the Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope — which aim to sharpen cosmological\nmeasurements by a factor of ten.

The talk briefly reviews the status and successes achieved. The focus will be on the promise for cosmology of the upcoming LIGO-India observatory in early 2030s\, LISA space mission in mid 2030s\, and the proposed next generation cosmic microwave background and terrestrial/lunar missions.
