DESCRIPTION:Title: On the radiative decays of quarkonia and why they can be important for searches beyond the Standard Model \nSpeaker: Damir Becirevic \nVenue&Time: Blue Room | 15:00 \nAbstract: I argue that the physics of quarkonia can offer fertile ground for searching for the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model at low energies. In this talk I will focus on light\, O(GeV)\, new-physics states that are pseudoscalar bosons. Prominent examples are the CP-odd Higgs\,  axion-like particles\, and even the Majoron. For that research to be phenomenologically viable\, it is necessary to have good control over  the Standard Model physics. In that respect\, current-day lattice QCD is particularly helpful. I focus on a few radiative decays of quarkonia  and show how they are computed on the lattice. I then discuss the prospects for phenomenology\, which crucially depend on the experimental  precision that can in fact be reached at the charm factory BESIII and/or the B-factory Belle II.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Exploring the Higgs potential and the evolution of the early universe \nSpeaker: Georg Weiglein (DESY) \nVenue&Time: Orange Room | 15:00 \nAbstract: The Higgs potential is of central importance for addressing fundamental open questions in our understanding of the dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking\, its connection to the electroweak phase transition in the early universe and for possible explanations for the observed imbalance between matter and anti-matter in the universe. However\, up to now neither the shape of the Higgs potential that is realised in nature is known nor the underlying physics that actually gives rise to the Higgs potential. The present experimental results from the LHC related to the Higgs potential are confronted with precise theory predictions\, and future prospects for the exploration of the HIggs potential are highlighted. The theoretical uncertainties in predicting the thermal evolution of the early universe and possible gravitational wave signals arising from the electroweak phase transition are discussed.

DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Pablo Sala (ift)\n\nTitle: “Quantum information transitions and the breakdown of non-Abelian topological quantum memories”\n\nVenue&Time: Gray Room 3 / 11:30\n\nAbstract: How much noise can a system tolerate before encoded quantum information becomes irrecoverable? This question connects quantum error correction to the stability of quantum matter. In this talk\, I will explore the transition between a recoverable and an irrecoverable phase when a quantum many-body system is subject to symmetry-preserving noise. For Abelian symmetries\, this reconstruction becomes essentially classical: local syndrome data captures the relevant information and maps to familiar statistical-mechanics decoding problems. For non-Abelian symmetries\, the situation is qualitatively different. The noisy state retains hidden fusion information that cannot be read from local syndromes alone. This leads naturally to a hierarchy of measurement protocols\, where increasingly nonlocal measurements reveal progressively more of the fusion structure. I will describe how this perspective gives a framework for comparing reconstruction thresholds and developing error correction protocols for the closely related problem of non-Abelian topological quantum memories.

Red Room (IFT)\n  \n11:15h Welcome coffee \n————————- \n11:30h First talk \nSpeaker: Sameer Murthy (Kingś College\, London) \nTitle: Near-extremal black holes in GR and in string theory \nAbstract:What happens to the thermodynamics of a black hole at very low temperatures as it\napproaches extremality? This question had remained a puzzle for many decades. Recent progress shows\nthat semi-classical physics in the near-extremal limit needs to be revisited due to the appearance\nof nearly gapless modes in the near-horizon of a near-extremal black hole. Upon approaching the\nextremal limit carefully\, one finds that the quantum fluctuations of these gapless modes leads to\nunexpectedly large effects even for a very massive black holes with weakly-curved horizons. In the\nfirst part of this talk\, I will explain this progress and discuss various applications. \nIn the second half of the talk\, I will discuss progress regarding the calculation of entropy of\nsupersymmetric black holes\, which has been one of the big successes of string theory. I will discuss\nhow the counting of entropy in string theory involves a subtlety regarding the supersymmetric index\,\nand how its resolution also involves\, once again\, taking the extremal limit carefully. Finally\, I\nwill discuss how this procedure leads to a new class of supersymmetric solutions corresponding to\nblack holes and black strings. \n————————- \n12:45-14:45 Lunch break and free time \n————————- \n15:00h Second talk \nSpeaker: Luciano Rezzolla (Institute of Theoretical Physics\, Goethe U.\, Frankfurt) \nTitle: Binary Neutron Stars: from macroscopic collisions to microphysics  \nAbstract: I will argue that if black holes represent one the most fascinating implications of\nEinstein’s theory of gravity\, neutron stars in binary system are its richest laboratory\, where\ngravity blends with astrophysics and particle physics. I will discuss the rapid recent progress made\nin modelling these systems and show how the gravitational signal can provide tight constraints on\nthe equation of state and sound speed for matter at nuclear densities\, as well as on one of the most\nimportant consequences of general relativity for compact stars: the existence of a maximum mass.\nFinally\, I will discuss how the merger may lead to a phase transition from hadronic to quark matter.\nSuch a process would lead to a signature in the post-merger gravitational-wave signal and open an\nobservational window on the production of quark matter in the present Universe. \n———————————————– \n16:00h Coffee time \n———————————————– \nMore information about these and following monthly seminars can be found at the  webpage https://sites.google.com/view/polygrav (No registration is needed)

DESCRIPTION:Date and time: 15:30h (CEST)\, Thursday\, 8 October 2026 \nLocation: CFTMAT Auditorium \nSpeaker: Izaskun Jimenez-Serra \nTitle: Towards prebiotic chemistry in the interstellar medium \nAbstract: In the past decade\, Astrochemistry has witnessed an impressive increase in the number of detections of new molecular species in space. The majority of these detections are related to complex organic molecules (or COMs)\, defined as carbon-based compounds with more than five atoms in their molecular structure.\nInterestingly\, some of these complex organics are of prebiotic interest and\, hence\, they are believed to be involved in the first biochemical processes that led to life.\nRecently\, we have obtained ultra-sensitive\, broadband spectral surveys toward the G+0.693 molecular cloud\, located in the Galactic Center and known to be one of the richest chemical repositories of the Milky Way.\nOur spectral surveys\, carried out with the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m telescopes\, have allowed us to detect nearly 30 new molecular species\, which include precursors of ribonucleotides\, nucleobases\, amino acids\, sugars\, proto-proteins and proto-lipids\, as proposed in theories of the origin of life.\nIn this talk\, I will present all these findings and analyze how chemical complexity builds up in the interstellar medium\, not only in the extreme environment of the Galactic Center\, but also during the initial conditions of Solar-system formation. \nZoom link to follow the colloquium live: coming soon.

DESCRIPTION:Title: Forecasting cosmological constraints beyond two-point statistics with One-Point Statistics \nSpeaker: Lina Castiblanco \nBio: I am a cosmologist and postdoctoral researcher at Bielefeld University. My research focuses on extracting information about the large-scale structure of the Universe beyond traditional two-point statistics\, particularly through one-point probability distribution functions of weak lensing and galaxy clustering. During my PhD at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso\, I worked on modelling the galaxy bispectrum and topological statistics to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity. \nVenue&Time: Red Room | 12:00 \nAbstract: Current and next-generation galaxy surveys will provide vast datasets to improve our understanding of the Universe\, once we extract their maximum information content. However\, the late-time matter distribution is non-Gaussian\, limiting the information captured by two-point statistics. To fully exploit the cosmological signal\, it is essential to incorporate beyond-two-point statistics\, such as one-point probability distribution functions (PDFs)\, which capture key non-Gaussian information from both galaxy clustering and weak lensing. In particular\, the weak lensing convergence PDF is sensitive to the physics of the dark Universe\, including dark matter and dark energy. This information is extracted more efficiently by performing a tomographic analysis. Additionally\, a combined analysis of galaxy clustering and weak lensing in a joint PDF offers a powerful way to jointly constrain cosmology and galaxy bias. We also need to consider systematic effects\, such as shape noise\, intrinsic alignments\, photometric redshift errors\, and mass-mapping\, which can lead to biased cosmological parameter estimates if they are neglected or not properly modelled. In the talk\, I will present our theoretical modelling of the tomographic convergence PDF and the joint weak lensing–galaxy clustering PDF\, including these systematic effects\, and show our analyses combining the PDF with standard 2-point correlation functions\, which show that the PDF is a powerful statistic for extracting non-Gaussian information.
