SUMMARY:PhD dissertation: 'Shedding light on extended scalar sectors'
DESCRIPTION:By Víctor Enguita \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 12:00 \nAbstract: \nThe Standard Model has a number of traits which are surprising from the theoretical perspective and may hint the presence of some underlying hidden structure beyond the SM. In this thesis\, we explored some of the open problems which materialize from those traits and could be solved by the presence of an extended scalar sector. First\, we considered axion-like particles (ALPs) using an Effective Field Theory (EFT) approach and imposed improved limits on their CP-odd couplings to fermions. The remainder of the thesis was devoted to the Electroweak hierarchy problem (EWHP). We presented two original works which follow two different guiding principles\, one traditional and the other rather innovative: symmetry and near-critical dynamics. The first among these works presents non-abelian discrete symmetries as able to suppress large radiative corrections and stabilize the masses of scalar particles. In the second contribution\, we argue that the small observed mass of the Higgs could be a trademark of the near-criticality of the Higgs sector\, backed by the observation that every parameter in the Higgs potential seems in fact to also be near-critical.  We explore the consequences of this fact using the so-called “Higgs metastability bound” in the case of a concrete model—the low-scale Majoron model—and demonstrate that this justification of the mass of the Higgs implies new experimental signals in future experiments and in particular\, in the future colliders. We argue that this conclusion is actually more general and should apply to wider contexts than the concrete model analysed.\nSupervisors: Belén Gavela & José Miguel No

SUMMARY:2nd EDI Training: 'Beyond law: Invisible Barriers to Women’s Access to Public Life'
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Soledad Escobar Villegas \nPhD in Political Science and García Pelayo Research Fellow at the Centre for Political and Constitutional Studies\, Ministry of the Presidency (Spain). \nAbstract: Over the last decades\, Western societies has introduced significant legislative changes aimed at promoting gender equality and increasing the representation of women in decision-making positions. However\, legal progress does not always translate into equal participation in practice. \nThis seminar will examine the gender representation gap in politics and society by distinguishing between formal legislative advances and the structural constraints and internal dynamics within political and social environments that continue to limit women’s access to the public sphere. The session will analyze patterns of underrepresentation and explore factors such as unequal career progression\, workplace cultures\, and informal power structures. It adopts an intersectional approach\, considering not only gender but also women’s ethnic and cultural backgrounds. The aim is to encourage students to critically assess how social and institutional systems shape women’s representation. \nThis seminar aligns with the objectives of the scientific outreach and culture component outlined in the Severo Ochoa project (CEX2020-001007-S\, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033). In addition to scientific excellence\, this project highlights the center’s commitment to a strong program of training and outreach activities with high social impact. In this context\, organizing training activities on equality\, diversity\, and inclusion helps to reinforce the role of the IFT as an institution committed to social responsibility and the continuous improvement of the scientific environment. This seminar provides tools to analyze the structural barriers present in the scientific field\, particularly in STEM disciplines such as theoretical physics\, aligning with the objectives of attracting and retaining diverse talent that foster an inclusive scientific environment.

SUMMARY:PhD dissertation: 'On String Phenomenology From a Swampland Perspective'
DESCRIPTION:Author: Gonzalo F. Casas\n\n\nTitle: On String Phenomenology From a Swampland Perspective.\n\n\nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 11:00\n\n\nAbstract:  This thesis investigates the deep interplay between particle physics\, cosmology\, and quantum gravity within the framework of string phenomenology. Focusing on Type IIA Calabi–Yau orientifolds with intersecting D6-branes\, we show that the suppression of neutrino masses at infinite-distance limits necessarily entails the emergence of light towers of states. This result establishes a direct link between particle-scale physics and the geometry of extra dimensions\, while also suggesting potentially testable phenomenological signatures. The thesis further connects inflationary dynamics to the quantum-gravity cutoff and examines how supersymmetry breaking in no-scale vacua can give rise to Minkowski backgrounds\, offering a novel perspective on moduli stabilization.\n \nSupervisor: Fernando Marchesano

SUMMARY:3rd EDI Training: Gender Perspective in Science
DESCRIPTION:3rd EDI Training – IFT Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Comitee Training Series \nSpeaker: Alejandra Gámez Abascal\, researcher at the CBM. Chair of CBM Equality Committee. Member of Instituto Universitario de Estudios de la Mujer (IUEM). \nTítulo: ‘Gender Perspective in Science and Research’ \nVenue&Time: Blue Room / 11:00 \nCoffee: 12:30 at the CFTMAT cafeteria. \nAbstract: \nIn recent years\, integrating a gender perspective into science and research has become a key priority within the European Research Area and international research policies. Beyond promoting equal opportunities\, the gender dimension contributes to improving the quality\, relevance\, and impact of scientific knowledge.\nThis seminar will introduce key concepts and definitions related to gender equality in order to provide a conceptual framework for the main principles guiding gender-sensitive research. \nWe will explore the importance of incorporating gender perspectives at different stages of the research process\, from research design and methodology to the analysis\, interpretation\, and dissemination of results. The seminar will also highlight current European policies and frameworks that promote gender equality in research institutions\, including Gender Equality Plans and the integration of the gender dimension in research proposals\, with the aim of supporting researchers in integrating gender perspectives into their scientific work. \n  \nThis seminar aligns with the objectives of the scientific outreach and culture component outlined in the Severo Ochoa project (CEX2020-001007-S\, funded by MCIN/AEI/10.13039/501100011033). SUMMARY:PhD Defense by Marienza Caldarola: 'Unveiling the Universe with Gravitational Waves: a Machine Learning approach'
DESCRIPTION:Title: Unveiling the Universe with Gravitational Waves: a Machine Learning approach\n\nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 10:30\n\nAbstract: This thesis is devoted to the study of gravitational waves\, combining theoretical investigations with novel applications of machine learning. The first part of the work addresses the dynamics of hyperbolic encounters\, a class of transient gravitational wave signals. By incorporating orbit precession and post-Newtonian corrections\, this study provides theoretical insights into the emission properties.\nThe second part shifts toward data-driven approaches\, exploring the use of advanced machine learning methods in gravitational waves field. Two main applications are considered: constraining the energy density of the stochastic gravitational wave background through astrometric measurements and inferring the properties of lensed gravitational wave signals. In both cases\, the machine learning frameworks developed here show significant gains in computational efficiency\, with particular promise for real-time signal analysis and alerts\, demonstrating the transformative role of machine learning in enhancing current and future gravitational wave data analysis strategies.\n\nSupervisors: Savvas Nesseris and Sachiko Kuroyanagi
