SUMMARY:Coloquio IFT: Horacio Casini (Instituto Balseiro)
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Entanglement as a tool in quantum field theory” \nSpeaker: Horacio Casini (Instituto Balseiro) \nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 11:30-12:30 \nAbstract: Entanglement entropy and other information measures can be regarded as non conventional tools in QFT. After describing their  general properties\, arising from simple heuristic considerations\, we  will show applications to irreversibility theorems with and without the presence of defects. These theorems establish the irreversibility of the renormalization group flow\, marking the loss of “degrees of freedom” from short to long scales. We will show how other quantum information theory quantities can be used to talk about symmetries\, and lead to an algebraic reformulation of some older ideas such as modular invariance and confinement.

SUMMARY:PhD Defense by Lorenzo Paoloni: "On the Moduli Space Curvature and Gravity Decoupling"
DESCRIPTION:Title: On the Moduli Space Curvature and Gravity Decoupling\n\nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 10:00-12:30\n\nAbstract: This thesis investigates the asymptotic regimes of four-dimensional N = 2 supergravity moduli spaces\, seeking a robust geometric definition of gravity decoupling. It does so in the context of the Swampland Program\, whose primary objective is to delineate the precise boundaries between consistent low-energy effective field theories and those incompatible with quantum gravity. Ultimately\, this thesis establishes a precise\, quantifiable dictionary between macroscopic moduli space geometry and microscopic quantum field theory constraints\, demonstrating that scalar curvature divergences at infinite distance are not geometric artifacts\, but rather the definitive sentinels of quantum field theories successfully isolating themselves from gravity.\n\n\n\n\nSupervisor: Fernando Marchesano

SUMMARY:Seminar: 'On the radiative decays of quarkonia and why they can be important for searches beyond the Standard Model' by Damir Becirevic
DESCRIPTION:Title: On the radiative decays of quarkonia and why they can be important for searches beyond the Standard Model \nSpeaker: Damir Becirevic \nVenue&Time: Blue Room | 15:00 \nAbstract: I argue that the physics of quarkonia can offer fertile ground for searching for the effects of physics beyond the Standard Model at low energies. In this talk I will focus on light\, O(GeV)\, new-physics states that are pseudoscalar bosons. Prominent examples are the CP-odd Higgs\,  axion-like particles\, and even the Majoron. For that research to be phenomenologically viable\, it is necessary to have good control over  the Standard Model physics. In that respect\, current-day lattice QCD is particularly helpful. I focus on a few radiative decays of quarkonia  and show how they are computed on the lattice. I then discuss the prospects for phenomenology\, which crucially depend on the experimental  precision that can in fact be reached at the charm factory BESIII and/or the B-factory Belle II.

SUMMARY:PhD Defense by Jesús Gambín Egea: “Quantum Properties of Inflationary Perturbations”
DESCRIPTION:Title: Quantum Properties of Inflationary Perturbations\n\nVenue & Time: Orange Room / 15:00-16:30\n\nAbstract: This thesis studies quantum aspects of inflationary perturbations beyond tree level\, with particular emphasis on loop corrections and renormalization. We develop a practical implementation of dimensional regularization for inflationary in-in calculations\, based on separating infrared and ultraviolet contributions and exploiting the universal high-momentum behavior of the mode functions. This allows the ultraviolet renormalization of inflationary observables to be carried out in a largely model-independent way. We apply these methods to the renormalization of scalar and tensor power spectra and of the scalar bispectrum\, and investigate which loop corrections represent intrinsically loop-generated physical effects\, as opposed to contributions that are degenerate with local counterterms. We also study the limits of classical stochastic descriptions of inflationary fluctuations and the non-Gaussian statistics relevant for primordial black-hole formation.\n\n\n\n\nSupervisor: Guillermo Ballesteros

SUMMARY:PhD Defense by David Alonso-González: Into The Dark: Novel and Complementary Searches in Hidden Sectors
DESCRIPTION:Title: Into The Dark: Novel and Complementary Searches in Hidden Sectors\n\nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 11:00-13:30\n\nAbstract: This thesis explores weakly coupled extensions of the Standard Model\, focusing on hidden sectors that may evade conventional experimental searches while addressing some of the main open questions in particle physics\, such as the nature of dark matter and the origin of neutrino masses. The work is organized around three complementary case studies involving a thermal dark matter candidate connected to the Standard Model through a vector portal\, axionlike particles produced in core-collapse supernovae and their possible detection at terrestrial neutrino experiments\, and the interplay between dark matter direct detection experiments and spallation source facilities to constrain the properties of sterile neutrinos. These three works emphasize the importance of combining different experimental strategies to constrain or reconstruct new weakly coupled physics scenarios.

SUMMARY:PhD Defense by Indira Ocampo Justiniano: A machine learning approach for unraveling the nature of dark matter and dark energy
DESCRIPTION:Title: A machine learning approach for unraveling the nature of dark matter and dark energy \nVenue & Time: Orange Room / 11:00-13:00 \n\nAbstract: Cosmology nowadays is benefiting from an exponential increase of data\, transforming into a precision science. This will help us understand better two of the most important open issues in theoretical physics\, namely understanding the nature of dark matter and dark energy. However\, the vast quantity and quality of the data collected from present and upcoming cosmological surveys has become so demanding\, that sophisticated computational tools are required. As a result\, machine learning methods are being implemented for data analysis and model constraints with the hope of alleviating tensions in the parameters inferred from different cosmological probes. A significant challenge remains in the complexity of these models: as architectures become more accurate\, this usually comes with the trade-off of their interpretability. This can lead to a lack of transparency and trustworthiness in a field that demands validation based on physical laws. The research presented in this thesis focuses on different architectures based on neural networks to search for signatures of physics beyond ΛCDM\, with a particular emphasis on interpretability tools that allow extracting the most informative data for the model’s predictions. \nSupervisor: Savvas Nesseris \n\nA small reception will take place afterwards on the terrace of IMDEA around 13:00. \n \n

SUMMARY:Seminar by Georg Weiglein (DESY): "Exploring the Higgs potential and the evolution of the early universe"
DESCRIPTION:Title: Exploring the Higgs potential and the evolution of the early universe \nSpeaker: Georg Weiglein (DESY) \nVenue&Time: Orange Room | 15:00 \nAbstract: The Higgs potential is of central importance for addressing fundamental open questions in our understanding of the dynamics of electroweak symmetry breaking\, its connection to the electroweak phase transition in the early universe and for possible explanations for the observed imbalance between matter and anti-matter in the universe. However\, up to now neither the shape of the Higgs potential that is realised in nature is known nor the underlying physics that actually gives rise to the Higgs potential. The present experimental results from the LHC related to the Higgs potential are confronted with precise theory predictions\, and future prospects for the exploration of the HIggs potential are highlighted. The theoretical uncertainties in predicting the thermal evolution of the early universe and possible gravitational wave signals arising from the electroweak phase transition are discussed.

SUMMARY:Quantum Information Journal Club: "Quantum information transitions and the breakdown of non-Abelian topological quantum memories"
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Pablo Sala (ift)\n\nTitle: “Quantum information transitions and the breakdown of non-Abelian topological quantum memories”\n\nVenue&Time: Gray Room 3 / 11:30\n\nAbstract: How much noise can a system tolerate before encoded quantum information becomes irrecoverable? This question connects quantum error correction to the stability of quantum matter. In this talk\, I will explore the transition between a recoverable and an irrecoverable phase when a quantum many-body system is subject to symmetry-preserving noise. For Abelian symmetries\, this reconstruction becomes essentially classical: local syndrome data captures the relevant information and maps to familiar statistical-mechanics decoding problems. For non-Abelian symmetries\, the situation is qualitatively different. The noisy state retains hidden fusion information that cannot be read from local syndromes alone. This leads naturally to a hierarchy of measurement protocols\, where increasingly nonlocal measurements reveal progressively more of the fusion structure. I will describe how this perspective gives a framework for comparing reconstruction thresholds and developing error correction protocols for the closely related problem of non-Abelian topological quantum memories.

SUMMARY:Seminar by Rome Samanta (SSM and INFN Naples): "Topological-defect searches in the mHz (LISA) band"
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Topological-defect searches in the mHz (LISA) band” \nSpeaker: Rome Samanta (SSM and INFN Naples) \nVenue & Time: Red Room | 15:00-16:00 \nAbstract: Topological defects\, such as domain walls and cosmic strings\, generically arise in a wide range of field-theory and particle-physics models. One of their most intriguing features is their potential to produce stochastic gravitational-wave backgrounds. If formed in the early Universe\, these defects can generate broad-band gravitational-wave spectra whose present-day signatures may fall within the sensitivity ranges of current experiments\, such as LIGO and pulsar timing arrays (PTAs)\, as well as upcoming detectors including LISA\, the Einstein Telescope (ET)\, and DECIGO. In this talk\, I will discuss the prospects for detecting gravitational-wave signals from topological defects in the LISA frequency band. Although the mHz band is particularly promising for probing early-Universe physics\, it is also expected to contain several astrophysical stochastic backgrounds. Identifying a cosmological signal in the presence of these foregrounds and backgrounds is therefore a nontrivial inference problem. In the first half of the talk\, I will introduce the basic theory of topological defects and discuss Bayesian methods for signal characterization and parameter inference using LISA simulations. In the second half\, I will focus on the detection prospects for one particular class of defects\, domain walls\, and one of their variants\, highlighting their characteristic gravitational-wave signatures and the challenges involved in distinguishing them from astrophysical backgrounds.

SUMMARY:Seminar: Alba Cervera Lierta [Barcelona Supercomputing Centre]: "Quantum Information as a Guiding Principle (and a Tool) for Fundamental Interactions"
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Quantum Information as a Guiding Principle (and a Tool) for Fundamental Interactions” \nSpeaker: Alba Cervera Lierta [Barcelona Supercomputing Centre] \nVenue & Time: Red Room | 15:00-16:00 \nAbstract: The interactions of the Standard Model are usually presented as consequences of gauge symmetry. In this talk I explore a complementary viewpoint: fundamental interactions are quantum\, and the S-matrix generates quantum-information resources\, such as entanglement or “magic” (non-stabilizerness)\, among the particles it scatters. I show that in tree-level QED\, electroweak\, QCD and perturbative gravity processes\, requiring these resources to be extremal is enough to recover gauge and diffeomorphism invariance\, and to provide a bound on the weak mixing angle\, suggesting quantum information may act as a guiding principle behind the couplings we observe.\nI then turn the argument around: can these same quantities serve as a tool? Colliders have become genuine quantum-information laboratories (entanglement and magic in top-quark pairs are now measured at the LHC) and I discuss how such observables probe physics beyond the Standard Model. As a concrete example\, I present a new collider observable built from the spin density matrix of the top-antitop system\, designed to search for invisible particles produced alongside a top-quark pair\, and show it outperforms standard rate- and kinematics-based searches.

SUMMARY:Polygonal Gravity Seminars
DESCRIPTION:Madrid’s Polygonal Gravity Seminar Series\nWednesday\, September 30th. Red Room (IFT)\n  \n11:15h Welcome coffee \n————————- \n11:30h First talk \nSpeaker: Sameer Murthy (Kingś College\, London) \nTitle: Near-extremal black holes in GR and in string theory \nAbstract:What happens to the thermodynamics of a black hole at very low temperatures as it\napproaches extremality? This question had remained a puzzle for many decades. Recent progress shows\nthat semi-classical physics in the near-extremal limit needs to be revisited due to the appearance\nof nearly gapless modes in the near-horizon of a near-extremal black hole. Upon approaching the\nextremal limit carefully\, one finds that the quantum fluctuations of these gapless modes leads to\nunexpectedly large effects even for a very massive black holes with weakly-curved horizons. In the\nfirst part of this talk\, I will explain this progress and discuss various applications. \nIn the second half of the talk\, I will discuss progress regarding the calculation of entropy of\nsupersymmetric black holes\, which has been one of the big successes of string theory. I will discuss\nhow the counting of entropy in string theory involves a subtlety regarding the supersymmetric index\,\nand how its resolution also involves\, once again\, taking the extremal limit carefully. Finally\, I\nwill discuss how this procedure leads to a new class of supersymmetric solutions corresponding to\nblack holes and black strings. \n————————- \n12:45-14:45 Lunch break and free time \n————————- \n15:00h Second talk \nSpeaker: Luciano Rezzolla (Institute of Theoretical Physics\, Goethe U.\, Frankfurt) \nTitle: Binary Neutron Stars: from macroscopic collisions to microphysics \nAbstract: I will argue that if black holes represent one the most fascinating implications of\nEinstein’s theory of gravity\, neutron stars in binary system are its richest laboratory\, where\ngravity blends with astrophysics and particle physics. I will discuss the rapid recent progress made\nin modelling these systems and show how the gravitational signal can provide tight constraints on\nthe equation of state and sound speed for matter at nuclear densities\, as well as on one of the most\nimportant consequences of general relativity for compact stars: the existence of a maximum mass.\nFinally\, I will discuss how the merger may lead to a phase transition from hadronic to quark matter.\nSuch a process would lead to a signature in the post-merger gravitational-wave signal and open an\nobservational window on the production of quark matter in the present Universe. \n———————————————– \n16:00h Coffee time \n———————————————– \nMore information about these and following monthly seminars can be found at the  webpage https://sites.google.com/view/polygrav (No registration is needed)

DESCRIPTION:Date and time: 15:30h (CEST)\, Thursday\, 8 October 2026 \nLocation: CFTMAT Auditorium \nSpeaker: Izaskun Jimenez-Serra \nTitle: Towards prebiotic chemistry in the interstellar medium \nAbstract: In the past decade\, Astrochemistry has witnessed an impressive increase in the number of detections of new molecular species in space. The majority of these detections are related to complex organic molecules (or COMs)\, defined as carbon-based compounds with more than five atoms in their molecular structure.\nInterestingly\, some of these complex organics are of prebiotic interest and\, hence\, they are believed to be involved in the first biochemical processes that led to life.\nRecently\, we have obtained ultra-sensitive\, broadband spectral surveys toward the G+0.693 molecular cloud\, located in the Galactic Center and known to be one of the richest chemical repositories of the Milky Way.\nOur spectral surveys\, carried out with the Yebes 40m and IRAM 30m telescopes\, have allowed us to detect nearly 30 new molecular species\, which include precursors of ribonucleotides\, nucleobases\, amino acids\, sugars\, proto-proteins and proto-lipids\, as proposed in theories of the origin of life.\nIn this talk\, I will present all these findings and analyze how chemical complexity builds up in the interstellar medium\, not only in the extreme environment of the Galactic Center\, but also during the initial conditions of Solar-system formation. \nZoom link to follow the colloquium live: coming soon.

SUMMARY:IFT Colloquium by Mark Srednicki (UC Santa Barbara): "Quantum chaos and the foundations of statistical mechanics"
DESCRIPTION:Coffee: 11:00 / Ground-floor cafeteria \nDate and time: 11:30h\, Wednesday\, 14 October 2026 \nLocation: Blue Room \nSpeaker: Mark Srednicki\, University of California\, Santa Barbara \nTitle: “Quantum chaos and the foundations of statistical mechanics” \nAbstract: Understanding the emergence of the rules of statistical mechanics for an isolated many-body system from an underlying quantum-mechanical microdynamics is a longstanding problem of\nfundamental physics. Concepts from the theory of quantized classically chaotic systems can be used to resolve at least some of the key issues\, and lead to the notion of “eigenstate\nthermalization”: individual energy eigenstates of the system as a whole appear to be states of thermal equilibrium when probed by local (few-body) observables.

SUMMARY:DIFT Colloquium by Paolo Dini: Can AI Save or Destroy the Planet? The Sustainability Challenge Behind Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Date and time: 15:30h\, Thursday\, 15 October 2026 \nLocation: CFTMAT Auditorium \nSpeaker: Paolo Dini \nAfiliación: Centre Tecnològic de Telecomunicacions de Catalunya (CTTC/CERCA) \nTitle: “Can AI Save or Destroy the Planet? The Sustainability Challenge Behind Artificial Intelligence” \nAbstract: Artificial Intelligence is increasingly being presented as a powerful enabler of sustainability. From climate change mitigation and renewable energy integration to environmental monitoring\, waste management\, water conservation\, disaster response\, and pollution control\, AI offers unprecedented opportunities to support more sustainable and resilient societies. \nHowever\, the rapid expansion of AI also raises critical questions. What are the environmental implications of having virtually unlimited computational power at our disposal? What is the real impact of AI on energy production and consumption? Can the benefits of AI outweigh the growing demand for data centers\, computing infrastructure\, and digital resources? And what technological and organizational foundations are needed to ensure that AI itself remains sustainable? \nThis talk will explore the dual role of AI as both a tool for sustainability and a source of environmental and societal challenges. It will examine the energy\, infrastructure\, and resource requirements behind modern AI systems\, discuss emerging approaches for reducing their environmental footprint\, and reflect on how research\, industry\, and policy can contribute to the development of truly sustainable AI. \nCoffee: 16:30 / Ground-floor cafeteria

SUMMARY:Seminar by Lina Castiblanco: "Forecasting cosmological constraints beyond two-point statistics with One-Point Statistics "
DESCRIPTION:Title: Forecasting cosmological constraints beyond two-point statistics with One-Point Statistics \nSpeaker: Lina Castiblanco \nBio: I am a cosmologist and postdoctoral researcher at Bielefeld University. My research focuses on extracting information about the large-scale structure of the Universe beyond traditional two-point statistics\, particularly through one-point probability distribution functions of weak lensing and galaxy clustering. During my PhD at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso\, I worked on modelling the galaxy bispectrum and topological statistics to constrain primordial non-Gaussianity. \nVenue&Time: Red Room | 11:00 \nAbstract: Current and next-generation galaxy surveys will provide vast datasets to improve our understanding of the Universe\, once we extract their maximum information content. However\, the late-time matter distribution is non-Gaussian\, limiting the information captured by two-point statistics. To fully exploit the cosmological signal\, it is essential to incorporate beyond-two-point statistics\, such as one-point probability distribution functions (PDFs)\, which capture key non-Gaussian information from both galaxy clustering and weak lensing. In particular\, the weak lensing convergence PDF is sensitive to the physics of the dark Universe\, including dark matter and dark energy. This information is extracted more efficiently by performing a tomographic analysis. Additionally\, a combined analysis of galaxy clustering and weak lensing in a joint PDF offers a powerful way to jointly constrain cosmology and galaxy bias. We also need to consider systematic effects\, such as shape noise\, intrinsic alignments\, photometric redshift errors\, and mass-mapping\, which can lead to biased cosmological parameter estimates if they are neglected or not properly modelled. In the talk\, I will present our theoretical modelling of the tomographic convergence PDF and the joint weak lensing–galaxy clustering PDF\, including these systematic effects\, and show our analyses combining the PDF with standard 2-point correlation functions\, which show that the PDF is a powerful statistic for extracting non-Gaussian information.

SUMMARY:Seminar by Mark Srednicki (University of California\, Santa Barbara): "Probability in Quantum Mechanics"
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Probability in Quantum Mechanics”\n \nSpeaker: Mark Srednicki (University of California\, Santa Barbara) \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 15:00 \nAbstract: This year marks the 100th anniversary of the Born rule for probabilities of outcomes of measurements on quantum systems\, but there is still no generally accepted understanding of its status. One reason for this lack of consensus is that there are several inequivalent conceptions of probability itself\, and any proposed derivation of the Born rule depends on which one is adopted. The key question for physics is whether or not a “collapse postulate” is needed\, or whether\, as originally proposed by Everett\, unitary time evolution of a quantum state of the universe is consistent with observation\, including the Born rule. I will argue that it is\, and that the appropriate conception of probability is the original one of Laplace. The “decoherent histories” formalism of Gell-Mann and Hartle provides the necessary mathematical structure.
