SUMMARY:Coloquio IFT: Horacio Casini (Instituto Balseiro)
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Entanglement as a tool in quantum field theory” \nSpeaker: Horacio Casini (Instituto Balseiro) \nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 11:30-12:30 \nAbstract: Entanglement entropy and other information measures can be regarded as non conventional tools in QFT. After describing their  general properties\, arising from simple heuristic considerations\, we  will show applications to irreversibility theorems with and without the presence of defects. These theorems establish the irreversibility of the renormalization group flow\, marking the loss of “degrees of freedom” from short to long scales. We will show how other quantum information theory quantities can be used to talk about symmetries\, and lead to an algebraic reformulation of some older ideas such as modular invariance and confinement.

SUMMARY:PhD Defense by Lorenzo Paoloni: "On the Moduli Space Curvature and Gravity Decoupling"
DESCRIPTION:Title: On the Moduli Space Curvature and Gravity Decoupling\n\nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 10:00-12:30\n\nAbstract: This thesis investigates the asymptotic regimes of four-dimensional N = 2 supergravity moduli spaces\, seeking a robust geometric definition of gravity decoupling. It does so in the context of the Swampland Program\, whose primary objective is to delineate the precise boundaries between consistent low-energy effective field theories and those incompatible with quantum gravity. Ultimately\, this thesis establishes a precise\, quantifiable dictionary between macroscopic moduli space geometry and microscopic quantum field theory constraints\, demonstrating that scalar curvature divergences at infinite distance are not geometric artifacts\, but rather the definitive sentinels of quantum field theories successfully isolating themselves from gravity.\n\n\n\n\nSupervisor: Fernando Marchesano

SUMMARY:PhD Defense by David Alonso-González: Into The Dark: Novel and Complementary Searches in Hidden Sectors
DESCRIPTION:Title: Into The Dark: Novel and Complementary Searches in Hidden Sectors\n\nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 11:00-13:30\n\nAbstract: This thesis explores weakly coupled extensions of the Standard Model\, focusing on hidden sectors that may evade conventional experimental searches while addressing some of the main open questions in particle physics\, such as the nature of dark matter and the origin of neutrino masses. The work is organized around three complementary case studies involving a thermal dark matter candidate connected to the Standard Model through a vector portal\, axionlike particles produced in core-collapse supernovae and their possible detection at terrestrial neutrino experiments\, and the interplay between dark matter direct detection experiments and spallation source facilities to constrain the properties of sterile neutrinos. These three works emphasize the importance of combining different experimental strategies to constrain or reconstruct new weakly coupled physics scenarios.

SUMMARY:PhD Defense by Indira Ocampo Justiniano: A machine learning approach for unraveling the nature of dark matter and dark energy
DESCRIPTION:Title: A machine learning approach for unraveling the nature of dark matter and dark energy\n\nVenue & Time: Red Room / 11:00-13:30\n\nAbstract: Cosmology nowadays is benefiting from an exponential increase of data\, transforming into a precision science. This will help us understand better two of the most important open issues in theoretical physics\, namely understanding the nature of dark matter (DM) and dark energy (DE). \nHowever\, the vast quantity and quality of the data collected from present and upcoming cosmological surveys has become so demanding that sophisticated computational tools are required. As a result\, machine learning (ML) methods are being implemented for data analysis and model constraints\, with the hope of alleviating tensions in the parameters inferred from different cosmological probes. \nA significant challenge remains in the complexity of these models: as architectures become more accurate\, this usually comes with the trade-off of their interpretability. This can lead to a lack of transparency and trustworthiness in a field that demands validation based on physical laws rather than artifacts arising during training. \nThe research presented in this thesis focuses on different ML architectures based on neural networks (NNs) to search for signatures of physics beyond ΛCDM. In Chapter 4\, we train a convolutional neural network on the Quijote N-body simulations to perform parameter inference of fσ8. \nIn Chapter 5\, we discuss the results of testing a type of Coupled Dark Energy model against ΛCDM\, by training an NN to discriminate the simulated fσ8 data. We extended this approach in Chapter 6\, by testing another alternative to ΛCDM\, the f(R) Hu-Sawicki model\, while this time we applied LIME (Local Interpretable Model-agnostic Explanations) after the NN was trained. LIME serves as an interpretability framework that assigns importance scores to input data\, identifying the features most relevant to the model’s decision-making. For both Chapter 5 and Chapter 6\, data simulations were tailored to the DESI survey specifications. \nIn Chapter 7\, we applied a similar pipeline trained on Cosmic Microwave Background simulated temperature and polarisation power spectra. For this project\, we targeted the Planck mission\, simulating data coming from ΛCDM\, f(R) and a non-standard oscillating feature in the primordial power spectrum. To explain individual model predictions\, we implement SHAP (SHapley Additive exPlanations). \nIn Chapter 8\, we extend this analysis by performing the training and interpretability analysis directly on the CMB maps\, integrated into my publicly available package SkyExplain¹. \nFinally\, in the Conclusions and future challenges\, I draw the main conclusions and discuss future work.
