SUMMARY:Quantum Info JC: "An operational continuum limit of quantum processes"
DESCRIPTION:Title: An operational continuum limit of quantum processes \nVenue & Time: 11:30 / Gray Room 3 \nAbstract: Quantum combs are a powerful tool for investigating quantum processes and their multi-time correlations in quantum information theory. However\, they do not naturally accommodate a physical connection to time\, and their probes are inherently instantaneous\, meaning control strength is not encoded in the theory. \nIn this talk I will present our work which introduces a framework of continuous process tensors (cPTs) for combs in a process context\, remedying this situation. Here\, process tensors are represented by bosonic field theory vectors on the relevant time interval. Associating controls with particle insertions allows us to relate the distinguishing power of instruments with the energetic resources required to implement them. For example\, recovering the discrete case\, instantaneous probes correspond to particle number eigenstates with infinite Fock space norm. As I will elaborate\, this finite-energy perspective also yields well-behaved measures of non-Markovianity\, fixing contradictory properties of standard measures. \nBuilding on this\, we also proved via an explicit dilation theorem that our framework connects to the Schrödinger equation. This gives physical context\, showing that any cPT can be approximated arbitrarily well in Fock space norm by a coupled system-environment dynamics. I will explain in more detail this theorem and show how it enables a set of structural results\, such as Choi duality in the continuum and a rigorous treatment of measurements. \nOur framework thus fills a substantial gap in the quantum information literature by enabling the physically-consistent study of open quantum dynamics and multi-time correlations in the continuum.

SUMMARY:SPS Journal Club: "Journey to the Centre of the Black Hole" by Matthew J. Blacker
DESCRIPTION:Strings\, Pheno and the Swampland (SPS) Journal Club. Every Thursday at 12:00 in the Red Room. \nTitle: “Journey to the Centre of the Black Hole” \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 12:00 \n Speaker: Matthew J. Blacker \nAbstract: What can we say about holographic theories\, given what we know about the bulk? Conversely\, how can we use holographic theories to probe regions of the bulk where classical physics breaks down? This talk will explore the link between bulk canonical quantum gravity and holographic theories\, using radial Wheeler-DeWitt states as the bridge. We will discuss how Wheeler-DeWitt states can be used a) to constrain putative holographic duals to de Sitter space\, and b) to probe the interior of black holes and the (chaotic) approach to the singularity. Finally\, we will explain how these radial states relate to $T^2(+ \Lambda_2)$ deformed field theories.

SUMMARY:Seminar by Bethany Anne Suter (Fermilab and IFT): “Dark matter sensitivity projections for all known inorganic materials”
DESCRIPTION:Title: Dark matter sensitivity projections for all known inorganic materials \nSpeaker: Bethany Anne Suter \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 15:00 \nAbstract: In this talk\, I will discuss my work on performing the highest-throughput search and evaluation of inorganic materials that can serve as excellent low-mass dark matter detectors. We use a graph neural network (GNN) based on the GNNOpt architecture to learn and generate dielectric tensors\, loss functions and sensitivity curves for both isotropic and anisotropic materials. Since the only required input for this GNN model is the structure of the unit cell\, this analysis can now be expanded to any known inorganic material\, increasing the number of materials analyzed by over 2 orders of magnitude. We apply this model to all materials available on the Materials Project database and show the results for absorption and scattering between dark matter and electrons. We also extend the GNN to predict anisotropy in the materials and calculate daily modulation in the interaction rates\, which enables sensitivity to the dark matter wind. The training dataset is derived from nearly one thousand DFT-calculated dielectric tensors taken from Materials Project as well as previously calculated loss functions and sensitivity curves. The GNN predicts the output to percent level accuracy with no prior knowledge of DFT and the output obeys the Kramers-Kronig relations and physical sum rules similarly to the original dataset.

SUMMARY:Old Journal Club: “Distortions of the Background Radiation Spectrum”
DESCRIPTION:Title: Distortions of the Background Radiation Spectrum \nSpeaker: Mikel Martin Barandiaran \nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 17:00 \nAbstract: The discovery of cosmic blackbody radiation with a temperature of 2.7 K is widely considered as powerful evidence for the hot\, big-bang model of the universe. As first discussed by Gamow\, it is assumed that a very hot\, dense plasma was present during the early stages of the universe\, and interaction of photons and electrons leads inevitably to an equilibrium (blackbody) spectrum. The shape of the equilibrium spectrum is preserved during the subsequent expansion and cooling\, although the radiation temperature decreases to the value of 2.7 K observed today.

DESCRIPTION:Title: “Three jobs for a U(1): dark matter stability\, light portals\, and neutrino and Higgs masses” \nSpeaker: Eduardo Peinado (Mexico U.) \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 15:00 \nAbstract: Adding a U(1) gauge symmetry is a simple yet surprisingly versatile extension of the Standard Model. In this talk\, I will discuss three roles it can play: stabilizing a dark matter candidate while generating neutrino masses\, opening light portals to new physics that can be probed by low-energy experiments and IceCube\, and\, through the heavy neutrinos of a low-scale seesaw\, setting an upper bound on the Higgs mass.

SUMMARY:SPS Journal Club: “Applications of categorical symmetries in two dimensions”
DESCRIPTION:Strings\, Pheno and the Swampland (SPS) Journal Club. Every Thursday at 12:00 in the Red Room. \nTitle: “Applications of categorical symmetries in two dimensions” \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 12:00 \n Speaker: \nAbstract: The goal of this talk is to give a quick overview of some of my recent work during the last years. I will begin with a lightning review of what generalised symmetries are and why it might be sensible\nto relax the group multiplication structure. I will then discuss two applications: \n1) In Non Linear Sigma Models\, the presence of such symmetries protects some of the coupling constants from receiving any quantum corrections. From a target space point of view\, this means some of the parameters of the background cannot receive \alpha’ corrections. \n2) In systems of free chiral fermions\, they give rise to the phenomenon of ‘twisted scattering’ (an incoming local operator that gets scattered into a point operator attached to a topological line)\, which help explain some long standing puzzles of the fermion-monopole scattering problem.

SUMMARY:Seminar by E. Dimastrogiovanni: "Probing the Early Universe with Gravitational Wave Anisotropies"
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Probing the Early Universe with Gravitational Wave Anisotropies” \nSpeaker: E. Dimastrogiovanni (Groningen) \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 15:00 \nAbstract: Gravitational-wave astronomy is opening a new window onto the Universe. Beyond the signals from individual events\, such as merging black holes\, we are beginning to uncover a background of gravitational waves that may carry traces of the very early Universe. Many different processes can contribute to this background\, so how can we distinguish between them? Looking only at its strength and frequency dependence may not be enough. In this talk\, I will explore another possibility: investigating the small variations in the gravitational-wave signal across the sky. These anisotropies may help us identify its origins and become a powerful new probe of inflation. I will then discuss how combining the gravitational-wave sky with the cosmic microwave background can help us search for primordial signals that might otherwise remain hidden.

SUMMARY:Old Journal Club by Michelangelo Tartaglia: "Quantized Hall conductivity in two-dimensions"
DESCRIPTION:Title: “Quantized Hall conductivity in two-dimensions” \nSpeaker: Michelangelo Tartaglia \nVenue & Time: Blue Room / 17:00 \nAbstract: It is shown that the quantization of the Hall conductivity of two-dimensional metals which has been observed recently by Klitzing\, Dorda\, and Pepper and by Tsui and Gossard is a consequence of gauge invariance and the existence of a mobility gap. Edge effects are shown to have no influence on the accuracy of quantization. An estimate of the error based on thermal activation of carriers to the mobility edge is suggested.\n \nPodeis encontrar toda la info en: https://inspirehep.net/literature/175567

SUMMARY:Seminar by Carlos Garcia Garcia (CIEMAT): “The status of single scalar field dark energy”
DESCRIPTION:Title: The status of single scalar field dark energy \nSpeaker: Carlos Garcia Garcia (CIEMAT) \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 15:00 \nAbstract: We are entering an exciting era in cosmology\, with tantalizing hints of dynamical dark energy. While current data are not yet sufficient to determine its nature\, they may already provide clues about its microphysical origin. Assuming the latest observations (DESI BAO + SNe Ia + CMB) are correct\, I will show that the evidence for dynamical dark energy remains mild and depends on prior choices. Furthermore\, assuming dark energy arises from a single scalar field\, I will show that current data mildly favor models with a negative squared mass and either a non-minimal coupling to gravity or a non-standard kinetic term. These scenarios lead to distinct signatures in the ISW effect\, the growth of cosmic structure\, and Solar System tests of gravity. I will discuss why current probes are not yet sufficient to distinguish between them and the prospects for uncovering the microphysical nature of dark energy with upcoming observations.

SUMMARY:Seminar by Cypris Plantier (LPSC\, Grenoble): “Various aspects of higher-form fields: from gauge-group topology to dark matter”
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Cypris Plantier (LPSC\, Grenoble) \nVenue & Time: Red Room / 15:00 \nTitle: Various aspects of higher-form fields: from gauge-group topology to dark matter \nAbstract: Quantum field theory allows for the existence of antisymmetric tensorial gauge fields possessing several Lorentz indices. These so-called higher-form fields constitute intriguing\, ambiguous objects sitting at the interface between local dynamics and global topology: they naturally couple to extended operators\, encode topological structures\, and play a central role in characterizing the vacuum structure of non-abelian gauge theories. At the same time\, those are shown to propagate physical scalar and vectorial degrees of freedom\, making higher-form fields natural and promising dark matter candidates.\nThis seminar will present a historical and conceptual overview of higher-form fields\, focusing on their application to dark matter physics. Particular emphasis will be placed on the recent developments regarding the interplay between duality and dark matter portals within effective field theory frameworks.
