- The Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT) participated in this event with the workshop “Hunting for Particles.”
Last September 25, the CSIC centres at the Cantoblanco Campus took part in the European Researchers’ Night, an event dedicated to bringing science and research closer to society. The event took place at Fundación Telefónica, where hundreds of people had the opportunity to participate in workshops, demonstrations, and outreach activities covering different areas of science.
The Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT) took part in the event with the workshop “Hunting for Particles”, an activity designed to introduce the public to the world of elementary particles and demonstrate, in a hands-on way, how they can be detected.
Led by IFT researcher Carlos Pena, the activity explained what elementary particles are and some of the techniques used to detect them. Participants then had the opportunity to use the MiniPIX EDU device, equipped with a Timepix detector, to observe in real time the tracks produced by different types of particles, including electrons, protons, alpha particles, and cosmic rays.
The European Researchers’ Night provides an opportunity to bring scientific research closer to society and foster interest in science among people of all ages.
