Recently people have studied the asymptotic symmetry group of the horizon of black holes and found that it contains an infinite-dimensional abelian group called “supertranslations”. It has been proposed that this could be relevant in solving the information loss paradox. We will follow an alternative approach to this group which has the advantage of being coordinate independent, contrary to what has been done in the literature. We will see how the horizon supertranslations are in fact gauge redundancies, so that they cannot be associated to physical microstates of the black hole.
