The Veneziano amplitude for the scattering of mesons was an instrumental computation in kickstarting string theory, decades ago. It possesses very desirable features and it has been well studied since then, but it is incomplete- it does not feature anything pertaining to asymptotic freedom. Modern string theory on the other hand is more concerned with highly-curved backgrounds in which this result cannot be reobtained easily. Our goal is to make contact between a field theory computation of Makeenko and Olesen that derives this amplitude using Wilson loops, and a dual formulation thereof in terms of holography and worldsheets hanging from these loops, probing the bulk of the holographic dual and therefore potentially accessing asymptotic freedom physics, in the form of string-perturbative corrections to the Veneziano amplitude, and discuss its implications.
