The so-far null experimental evidences for WIMP dark matter (DM) motivates the study of other alternatives to produce the DM abundance that we observe today. An increasingly popular framework is the so-called FIMPs, which describe candidates whose couplings to the Standard Model (SM) are much smaller than for WIMPs. This feature implies a) that DM will be produced out of equilibrium with the SM, and b) the phenomenology of those candidates is much more challenging. In this talk I will review the different mechanisms of FIMP production in the early universe, before discussing about present and near future possibilities to experimentally test the parameter space of such type of DM candidates.
