Abstract:

We have been wondering if we are alone from the moment we acquire conscience of our place in the Universe. With 3450 planets discovered to date, mostly in the last decade, we have started for the first time in the history of humanity to have some answers regarding the ubiquity of earth-like planets. The scientific pathway that follows, once we have found planets at the right distance from their parent star, is to establish the presence of an atmosphere, the atmospheric composition, and then determine the presence of biosignatures. I will explain the discovery of the TRAPPIST-1 planetary system in this context.
