This thesis aims to study of the relationship between gauge and spacetime degrees of freedom in finite volume Yang-Mills theories with twisted boundary conditions. We study the dynamics of the theory through the study of the 't Hooft coupling constant, defined using the gradient flow. The works comes in two parts: first, we present a computation in continuum perturbation theory in which we relate our coupling at NLO to the MS-bar one, determine the ratio of Λ parameters between both schemes, and deduce some implications concerning non-conmutative gauge theories and the validity of volume independence, and then second we show the results of a step scaling computation on the lattice for the particular case of SU(3), intended as a first probe for other values of N, and in which we determine the running of the coupling along a vast range of energies in the scale.
