Postdocs at the IFT within the 'La Caixa Junior Leader' program - 2025

The ”la Caixa” Foundation is now accepting applications for its annual Junior Leader postdoctoral fellowship program, aimed at researchers of any nationality who wish to lead STEM projects in Spain or Portugal.

The Junior Leader postdoctoral fellowship program by the ”la Caixa” Foundation is your opportunity to advance your academic career.

With more funding, greater independence, and leadership training, this fellowship supports excellent scientists like you who wish to continue their research in Spain or Portugal.

If you have obtained your doctoral degree between two and seven years before the application deadline, you have until October 3, 2024, to submit your application.

The program offers two modalities:

Incoming: 20 fellowships for researchers who have resided in Spain or Portugal for less than 12 months in the last 3 years.

Retaining: 20 fellowships for researchers who have resided in Spain or Portugal for more than 12 months in the last 3 years.

Junior leader: Incoming

20 fellowships for developing a postdoctoral research project at Spanish centers of excellence accredited with Severo Ochoa, María de Maeztu, or Instituto de Salud Carlos III, or at Portuguese units accredited as excellent by the Fundação de Ciência e Tecnologia (FCT).

STEM disciplines (life sciences, experimental sciences, physics, chemistry, engineering, technology, and mathematics).

Maximum duration: 3 years.

Total maximum allocation: €320,100.

Training program in transversal skills.

Researchers of all nationalities can apply to the Junior Leader - Incoming postdoctoral fellowship subprogram. To be eligible, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Experience: Candidates must have obtained their doctoral degree between two and seven years prior to the application deadline. The date of obtaining the doctoral degree will be understood as the date of the doctoral thesis defense. Special deadlines apply for candidates with interruptions in their research career.

Mobility:

  • For candidates interested in Spanish centers or units: Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the application deadline.

  • For candidates interested in Portuguese units: Candidates must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Portugal for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the application deadline. Short stays, such as holidays, will not be taken into account.

Special deadlines will apply for candidates with interruptions in their research career and for those researchers who have undergone the process to obtain refugee status under the Geneva Convention.

Junior leader : Retaining 

20 fellowships for developing a postdoctoral research project at any university or research center in Spain or Portugal.

STEM disciplines (life sciences, experimental sciences, physics, chemistry, engineering, technology, and mathematics).

Maximum duration: 3 years.

Total maximum allocation: €320,100.

Training program in transversal skills.

Call requirements: Researchers of all nationalities can apply to the Junior Leader – Retaining postdoctoral fellowship subprogram. Fellows can carry out their research project at a Spanish or Portuguese university or research center.

To be eligible, candidates must meet the following requirements:

Experience: Candidates must have obtained their doctoral degree between two and seven years prior to the application deadline. The date of obtaining the doctoral degree will be understood as the date of the doctoral thesis defense. Special deadlines apply for candidates with interruptions in their research career.

Candidates must have completed research stays at centers or universities outside of Spain (or outside of Portugal for those joining Portuguese centers), for a total duration of at least 6 months, before the application deadline, either during their doctoral or postdoctoral studies.

Mobility:

  • For candidates interested in Spanish centers or universities: Candidates must have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Spain for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the application deadline.

  • For candidates interested in Portuguese centers or universities: Candidates must have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in Portugal for more than 12 months in the three years immediately prior to the application deadline.

Special deadlines apply for candidates with interruptions in their research career and for those researchers who have undergone the process to obtain refugee status under the Geneva Convention.
