New IFT video: How to capture the shadow of a black hole

In 2019, the publication of the first photograph of a black hole, the one at the center of the Messier 87 galaxy, ASTONISHED the scientific community and the public opinion. The method used to capture these cosmic objects involves obtaining an image not of the black hole itself but of its SHADOW.

In this video, Maria Jose Rodriguez illustrates the significant scientific breakthrough represented by the generation of this first image, followed in 2022 by the corresponding capture of the shadow of the black hole at the center of our own galaxy, called Sagittarius A*.

We will learn about the technological advances required to reach this moment, from the photographing of a solar eclipse a hundred years ago, through the fundamentals of Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, to a massive international collaboration to achieve the creation of a telescope as big as the Earth.
