The notion of global symmetry in quantum field theory has been generalized in many interesting directions, including p-form symmetries, higher-form symmetries, and non-invertible symmetries. In this talk, I will discuss aspects of generalized global symmetries in the context of field theories realized in string/M-theory and holography. Central to the analysis is the notion Symmetry Topological Field Theory (SymTFT). I will discuss how the SymTFT and its topological operators can be extracted from the gravity dual using two related approaches, one based on the supergravity action, the other based on branes. General features of the holography of finite generalized symmetries will be elucidated by two case studies: the Klebanov-Strassler setup for 4d super Yang-Mills theory, and AdS7 x RP4 for a class of 6d (2,0) SCFTs.
