In this talk I will introduce the idea of effective holographic field theories. Understanding the properties of these general theories could help us understand the behavior of strongly coupled matter.  The focus of the talk will be on condensed matter systems, for which the standard weak coupling techniques are not enough to understand  the physics of such materials. In particular I will show how some of the properties of the so called strange metals and Weyl semimetals can be “captured” with simple holographic toy models.
