Abstract:

Heuristic arguments about how the symmetries of quantum gravity must be have existed for a while. In this session of the club we will review a "formal proof" in the context of AdS/CFT by Harlow and Ooguri (see 1810.05337 and 1810.05338) that rules out global symmetries and non-compact gauge groups, and asserts that matter fields must transform in all possible representations of the gauge group.
