Álvaro de Rújula receives the Medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics

IFT researcher Álvaro de Rújula has been awarded with the Medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics for "his exceptional scientific career in the field of theoretical physics, which has made him a world leader in elementary particle physics, quantum chromodynamics and cosmology”.

His works have impacted numerous fields of physics, contributing fundamentally to the understanding of matter, energy and our universe. In addition, the jury has highlighted "his relevant contribution to the outreach of physics and to bring its results closer to society".

The jury of the Physics Awards "Royal Spanish Physics Society - BBVA Foundation 2022" has deliberated among 42 candidates with scientific and academic profiles of extraordinary quality when awarding the prizes for each of the 9 categories.

About Álvaro de Rújula

D. Álvaro de Rújula Alguer obtained his doctorate in Theoretical Physics in 1968 at Madrid. Since then, he has taught at several international universities, such as the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques (IHES), Harvard and Boston Universities,

The biggest part of his career has been developed at the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN), where he was a member between 1977 and 2009. At CERN he has participated in the commissioning project for the Large Hadron Collider (LHC). Since 2009, he is a member of the Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT UAM / CSIC).

His research has focused mainly on theoretical physics of elementary particles, delving into the internal structure of the atom and aspects such as the phenomenology of the Standard Model, quarks, and neutrinos; cosmic rays, particle astrophysics and cosmology. In addition, throughout his career he has published numerous articles and books.

The Royal Spanish Society of Physics (RSEF) and the BBVA Foundation recognize creativity, effort and achievement in the field of physics in order to serve as a stimulus for professionals who carry out their work both in research –with special attention to young people– such as in the areas of secondary and university education, innovation, technology and outreach.
