Awarding ceremony of the 2023 Julius Wess Award to Belen Gavela
  • In an event celebrated on the evening of February 9th at the Karlsruhe Institute for Technology.
  • For pioneering research in particle physics.

The Julius Wess Award 2023 goes to IFT researcher professor Belén Gavela in recognition of her significant contributions in the field of theoretical and phenomenological particle physics, with particular emphasis on CP violation and flavor physics in quarks and leptons, on the study of neutrino oscillations and on effective field theories related to electroweak symmetry breaking.

The ceremony

The afternoon session commenced with a 10-minute musical contribution titled "Salty Tunes", followed by a welcome address from Thomas Hirth. Anke-Susanne Müller then introduced the KIT Centre Elementary Particle and Astroparticle Physics (KCETA).

The subsequent 30 minutes were dedicated to Pilar Hernández's presentation on "Taming Asymmetries of Nature: The imprint of the matter-antimatter imbalance in neutrino physics". A 15-minute coffee break followed.

"Salty Tunes" made another 10-minute appearance. Thomas Schwetz-Mangold delivered a 15-minute laudation and Thomas Hirth presented the Julius Wess Award.

Belén Gavela then explored "The QCD axion sum rule". Another 10-minute musical contribution, "Salty Tunes," followed. The event concluded with a reception.
