The IFT Receives Severo Ochoa Distinction at Recent Ceremony
  • The Institute for Theoretical Physics receives recognition for the Severo Ochoa Accreditation.
  • The last renewal of the accreditation took place in 2020 and will remain valid until the end of 2025.

The Ministry of Science, Innovation, and Universities (MICIU), through the Spanish State Research Agency (AEI), yesterday held the recognition ceremony for the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu Accreditations, which are awarded to centers and research units of excellence in Spain.

The Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT UAM-CSIC), which last renewed its accreditation in 2020, received the Severo Ochoa and María de Maeztu (SOMMa) alliance statue, a symbol of this recognition. The IFT was first awarded the Severo Ochoa Distinction in 2012. The funding for the IFT Severo Ochoa Program, SO (IFT), began on July 1, 2013, and will conclude on December 31, 2025, including this extension. Only a few research centers in Spain have received this funding for the third time.

The funding granted by the Severo Ochoa Program strengthens organization, strategic research planning, and promotes best practices in research management. It also aims to increase the visibility of centers and units of excellence, promote internationalization, and attract and hire young research talent.
