Jose Luis Sanchez Gomez

We are in sorrow at the DFT and the IFT for the death of our dear colleague Jose Luis Sanchez Gomez.

Jose Luis was one of the founding members of the Department of Theoretical Physics at UAM in 1971 and he was its director in several periods in the last four decades. Jose Luis did his thesis in the late 60’s in Valencia, under the supervision of Pedro Pascual., on topics related with the interactions between elementary particles and nuclei.

He was also one of the students (along with A. de Rujula, B. Carreras, M. Aguilar, J.A. Rubio  among others) of the special course organized by JEN in 1965 about the Physics of Elementary Physics, which had an important impact in the awakening of High Energy Physics in Spain. The interactions between particles and nuclei was his fundamental area of research until  the mid-90’s in which he became interested in the foundations of quantum mechanics. Jose Luis supervised PhD  and Master thesis in both areas, and some of his students are now members of the DFT and the IFT.

He was a great teacher until he became emeritus in 2012, and wrote a clasic book about Problems in Quantum Mechanics (with R.F. Alvarez-Estrada). He also did divulgative work in his book ‘The quantum reality’ (with A. Casinello).

He had relevant apointments within the Real Sociedad Española de Fisica and made important work as general editor of the ‘Revista de la RSEF’. We all remember him for his kind personality and his collaborative attitude towards the Department. The DFT and the IFT are in debt with him. Rest in peace, Jose Luis.
