40 High School students visit IFT to participate in the Particle Physics Masterclass
  • After attending introductory seminars, they had the opportunity to analyze real data from the LHC.

Last Friday, March 7, 40 high school students had the opportunity to delve into the world of particle physics at the Institute of Theoretical Physics (IFT).

The event, organized in coordination with CIEMAT, was dedicated to introductory seminars on physics, accelerators, and detectors, where students learned the fundamentals of particle physics research. Afterwards, they conducted a hands-on data analysis exercise using real data from the ATLAS experiment at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at CERN. In the afternoon, they joined a videoconference with other international institutes from Colmar (France), Kraków (Poland), Mainz (Germany), and Tbilisi (Georgia), as well as CERN itself, to share and discuss the results obtained during the session.

This activity is part of the international Hands on Particle Physics Masterclass 2025, coordinated by the International Particle Physics Outreach Group (IPPOG), in which hundreds of institutions from around the world participate. Through this event, students have the opportunity each year to experience a unique introduction to particle physics research and global scientific collaboration.
