Prof. Barry Barish is visiting us Prof. Barry Barish from Caltech is visiting the IFT for the period June 19th to 21st, 2017. His office number is B03. Prof. Barry Barish has recently received the Princess of Asturias Award. His primary research interest has been the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), since he became Principal Investigator in 1994 and Director in 1997. He led the effort through the final design stages, approval for funding by the NSF National Science Board in 1994, and then the construction and commissioning of the LIGO interferometers in Livingston, LA and Hanford, WA. In 1997, he created the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC), which now enables more than 1000 collaborators world-wide to participate in LIGO.
Prof. Nima Arkani-Hamed is visiting us Prof. Nima Arkani-Hamed from IAS – Princeton is visiting the IFT for the period June 22nd to 23rd, 2017. His office number is B03. One of the leading particle physics phenomenologists of his generation, Nima Arkani-Hamed is concerned with the relation between theory and experiment. His research has shown how the extreme weakness of gravity, relative to other forces of nature, might be explained by the existence of extra dimensions of space, and how the structure of comparatively low-energy physics is constrained within the context of string theory. He has taken a lead in proposing new physical theories that can be tested at the Large Hadron Collider at CERN in Switzerland.
SO(IFT) Distinguished Prof. Viatcheslav Mukhanov Prof. Viatcheslav Mukhanov from Arnold Sommerfeld Center for Theoretical Physics, LMU is visiting the IFT for the period June 21st to 22nd, 2017, as distinguished Severo Ochoa visiting professor. His office number is B11. Prof. Mukhanov holds the Chair of Cosmology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. He is one of a select group of researchers who have made significant contributions to the theory of cosmic inflation. In 1980–81, together with G. Chibisov, he discovered that quantum fluctuations could be responsible for the large-scale structure of the universe. They calculated the spectrum of fluctuations in a model with a quasi-exponential stage of expansion, later known as inflation, in very good agreement with recent measurements of the CMB fluctuations. He has received numerous awards, the Gold Medal of the Soviet Academy of Sciences, the Oskar Klein Medal, and in 2015 the Max Planck Medal. He has received the Chaire Blaise Pascal, a prestigious distinction awarded by the French Government, the Tomalla Prize by the Swiss Tomalla Foundation for Gravity Research, and the Amaldi Medal of the Italian Society for General Relativity. In 2013 he was awarded, with A. Staorbinsky, the Gruber Prize in Cosmology.
SO(IFT) Distinguished Prof. Georgi Dvali Prof. Georgi Dvali from LMU Munich is visiting the IFT for the period June 19th to 21st, 2017, as distinguished Severo Ochoa visiting professor. His office number is B11. Prof. Dvali is a world-renowned theoretical particle physicist. Among his many contributions stand his pioneering works on Large Extra Dimensions and Modified Gravity. Prof. Dvali is a recipient of the New York City Mayor's Award for Excellence in Science and Technology. He has held a David and Lucille Packard Fellowship and an Alfred P. Sloan Fellowship. In 2009, he was awarded an Alexander von Humboldt Professorship and was appointed to the Chair of Theoretical Particle Physics at LMU’s Arnold Sommerfeld Center for Theoretical Physics. He is also a Director of the Max Planck Institute for Physics in Munich and holds a Silver Professorship Chair at New York University.
