One position open in science journalism, tutored by the science section of El Pais

This one-year position is intended as a first step into science journalism, with starting dates around the fall 2017, although there is some flexibility in dates. Technically, it is an ESR (Early Stage Researcher) position of the European Horizon 2020 ITN Elusives, www.elusives.eu, a European network which focuses on neutrino and dark matter physics and their interplay. The training will be tutored by the Science section of the Spanish newspaper “ El Pais”, which is one of the partner organizations of the network.  All applications must be submitted via http://www.elusives.eu/jobs, exclusively.

The salary corresponding to an ESR position consists of the gross Monthly Living Allowance of 3,110 EUR per month multiplied by the EU correction coefficient (97,6% for Spain); in addition, a Mobility Allowance of 600 EUR per month will be paid, and also possibly another 500 EUR per month of Family Allowance depending on marital status. The ESR salary is subject to local tax, social benefit and other deductions following Spanish regulations.

 

By EU requirements, eligible candidates may be of any nationality and, at the time of recruitment (start date of contract),

 

-Must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent) of their careers as journalist and have not yet been awarded a doctoral degree. This four-year span is measured from the date when they had obtained the degree in journalism which would formally entitle them to embark on a doctorate, either in the country in which the degree was obtained or in Spain. This applies even if a PhD degree is not foreseen.

-Must not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc) in Spain for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately prior to the date of contract signature. Short stays such as holidays and/or compulsory national service are not taken into account.

Furthermore: 

-The candidate should speak Spanish perfectly and be fluent in English. He or she should have some previous experience and/or training in science journalism or science communication.

All nodes of the network participate in the training, feeding upon collaborations through the network. The position includes short stays in some of the world leading research centers within the network.  Yearly meetings of the complete network are foreseen.

*Scientific Partner Organizations: CERN plus partner organizations in seven non-European countries: USA (Harvard University., Columbia University.-XENON expt., Fermilab theory group + all major neutrino and dark matter expts., University of Washington, University of California at Berkeley-LBNL, Stony Brook University.), Japan (ICRR and KAVLI IPMU, University of Tokyo), China (Institute of High Energy Physics, Chinese Academy of Sciences), Brazil (Sao Paulo University),  Colombia (Antonio Nariño U.),  Egypt (Zewail City for Science), India (HRI, New Delhi U.), Iran (IPM).

*Private-Sector Partner Organizations: Hamamatsu, Kromek, GMV, Medialab, Narcea Multimedia, and newspaper El País.
