PhD position in Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology

The Astroparticle Physics group at the Institute for Theoretical Physics (IFT) UAM-CSIC and the Department of Theoretical Physics at Universidad Autónoma de Madrid (UAM) invites applications for one PhD position in Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology, with a focus on dark matter searches.

This is a 3+1 years PhD position funded by an “Atracción de Talento Investigador” grant awarded by Comunidad de Madrid regional government to Dr. Miguel A. Sánchez-Conde with the goal of elucidating the precise role of dark matter halo substructure in dark matter searches, and to search for it with current or planned gamma-ray telescopes. The one-year extension will be possible thanks to a “Severo Ochoa excellence” grant awarded by the Spanish Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness to the IFT, where research in the frontiers of Elementary Particle Physics, Astroparticles and Cosmology is developed. The successful candidate is expected to start in October 2017.

The PhD project leader is a member of the Fermi LAT Collaboration and of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) Consortium. The student is expected to join and develop most of his/her work within these collaborations. The IFT Astroparticle Physics group has also broad expertise in the analysis of N-body cosmological simulation data, and possesses an excellent record/network of collaborations with (local, national and international) experts in both Astroparticle Physics and Cosmology. See www.miguelsanchezconde.com and http://dark.ft.uam.es/papp/ for further information about the project leader and group research activities.

Suitable candidates must hold a M.Sc. degree in Particle Physics or Astrophysics, and submit applications by e-mail before August 25th 2017 to receive full consideration. The application (preferably in a single PDF) should include a cover letter, a CV, and a brief statement of research interests and experience (maximum 2 pages). Applicants must also arrange for 2 letters of recommendation to be sent separately to the same e-mail address below.

Further inquires about the positions are welcome.
