The First Telescope on a Cherenkov Telescope Array Site Makes its Debut

The Cherenkov telescope array (CTA) celebrated on October 10th 2018 the inauguration of its first telescope. The new telescope, named LST-1, is intended to become the first of the four Large Size Telescopes (LSTs) on the CTA-North site, which is located at the Observatorio del Roque de los Muchachos in La Palma island. LST-1 is a titanic structure of 45 meters high, 23 meters diameter and around 100 tons, yet it can point to any position of the gamma-ray sky in about 20 seconds. The inauguration of the LST-1 is a major accomplishment of the LST team and of the CTA Consortium as a whole. Around 200 prominent people from 10 countries attended the inauguration in La Palma, including the Nobel Prize Takaaki Kajita and the Spanish Ministry Pedro Duque. The IFT is a CTA member since 2017 and mainly contributes to delineate and strengthen the dark matter science case, for which the LSTs will be particularly relevant.
