Dr. Fernando Quevedo from ICTP is visiting the IFT for the period September 18th to 21st, 2018. His office number is 401. He is a well-known theoretical particle physicist with wide-ranging research interests in string theory, phenomenology and cosmology. He was awarded the 1998 ICTP Prize in recognition of his important contributions to superstring theory. | Dr. Tsutomu Yanagida (from IPMU-Tokyo and Shanghai U) is visiting IFT for the period October 19th to November 12th, 2019.His office number is 205. His research interests are: particle physics, with a focus on neutrino physics, leptogenesis, dark matter and general BSM model building. | Mikel did his PhD in the University of the Basque Country (Spain, 2017-2021) and his current research focuses on Supergravity and String Theory, with a special focus on their cosmological applications.
Within this vast subject, he has been working on the application Gaussian Random Fields to emulate the String Theory Landscape, the statistical characterisation of the vacua of String Theory, and False Vacuum Decay processes involving membranes. | Sachiko Kuroyanagi joined our institute as an Atracción de Talento Researcher starting September 2020. She obtained her PhD in 2010 at Nagoya University in Japan. Prior to moving to IFT, she was assistant professor at Nagoya University (2015-2020) after having held several postdoctoral positions in Japan and Korea. Her research field is theoretical and observational cosmology, especially focusing on gravitational waves with the aim of understanding the history of the universe using upcoming experiments. |

Alejandro Vilar López, currently a FPU PhD student under the supervision of José Edelstein at the Instituto Galego de Física de Altas Enerxías - Universidade de Santiago de Compostela, is visiting the IFT until March 31st 2021. His main line of research focuses on holography and quantum gravity, as well as higher-curvature corrections to General Relativity. In 2016, Alejandro already visited the IFT as a JAE-Intro fellow under the supervision of Jose L. F. Barbón, and the aim of this new visit will be to understand better what the AdS/CFT correspondence can teach us about reconstructing bulk information from a boundary perspective. | |||

His field of expertise is computational condensed matter, focusing on quantum mechanical problems with strong correlations. He conducts research on several topics ranging from quantum transport, to exotic phases of matter in cold atom systems. He is regarded as one of the developers of the time-dependent density matrix renormalization group method, a numerical technique able to simulate real and imaginary time dynamics of large correlated quantum systems. | Dr. Agostino Patella from CERN and Plymouth University is visiting the IFT for the period February 26th to March 3rd, 2016. His research focuses on the phenomenology of high energy physics (in particular Higgs physics, neutrino physics, top physics, dark matter, supersymmetry, and collider physics), with an special dedication to the interplay between theory and experiments, together with the development of multivariate analyses and machine learning techniques in order to try to optimize the search strategies for physics beyond the standard model at particle colliders. |

Jacopo obtained his PhD at the University of Amsterdam (Nikhef) in 2018 and he then spent three years as a postdoctoral fellowship at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris. He works at the interface between particle physics and cosmology. His research interests include Higgs cosmology, effective field theories, non-gaussianities and primordial black holes from (multifield) inflation and primordial features in the stochastic background of gravitational waves with a recent interest on observability in LISA of which is a member since 2020. | Lucas Pinol obtained his PhD at the Institut d'Astrophysique de Paris (IAP) in 2021 and is now joining IFT as a postdoctoral researcher associated to the grant "Atracción de Talento" of Matteo Fasiello. Lucas is an expert of Early Universe's physics, with special focus on multifield scenarios of Inflation and Reheating. His works range from theoretical developments to phenomenological predictions, using both analytical and numerical descriptions. Particular subjects of interest for him are Primordial non-Gaussianities and their use as a kind of cosmological collider to better understand the spectrum of masses and spins of the primordial fields, the production of entropy perturbations during inflation and reheating and their imprints on cosmological observables, as well as more formal developments of effective field theories and non-perturbative techniques (notably stochastic inflation) to describe cosmological correlators. At IFT, he will pursue his quest for the primordial field content, with an emphasis on the use of primordial gravitational waves as a probe of the inflationary universe, anticipating on the advent of the low-frequency gravitational-wave experiments era in the coming years. | Mario Flory obtained his PhD in 2016 at the Max Planck Institute for Physics and LMU Munich, Germany, and afterwards went as a postdoc to Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland. From 2017 to 2020 he was principal investigator of his own grant from the Polish National Science Centre, and visited the Perimeter Institute in Waterloo, Canada, for three months in 2018. His research focuses on the AdS/CFT correspondence and its connections to condensed matter physics (especially the physic of localised defects such as the Kondo effect) and quantum information theory (especially quantum entanglement and quantum complexity). | Martín de los Rios obtained his degree in Astronomy at Universidad Nacional de Córdoba in Argentina. After that, he obtained his PhD at the same University, focusing on topics related with the application of machine learning techniques to different astronomical problems.
From 2019 to 2021, he was a postdoctoral fellow at the ICTP-SAIFR in São Paulo (Brazil), where he conducted research on the estimation of dark matter galaxy profiles with deep learning methods.
His main research interest are cosmology, astro-particles and machine learning/statistical methods.
Dr. de los Rios comes to the IFT as a new postdoctoral fellow to work on dark matter direct detection as part of the superCDMS collaboration. |

Matteo Braglia obtained his PhD in Astrophysics at the University of Bologna in 2021 discussing a thesis on Scalar-Tensor Theories as a possible solution to the H0 tension. His research interests include Early Universe inflation and its signatures in the form of primordial features in cosmological observables, Primordial Black Holes and Gravitational Wave Physics. He is joining IFT as a postdoc of Dr. Sachiko Kuroyanagi. | Matteo Fasiello has joined IFT as an Atracción de Talento Researcher in September 2020. Matteo comes to Madrid from the Institute of Cosmology and Gravitation in Portsmouth, where he was a research fellow. Before his time in the UK Matteo has held postdoctoral positions at Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland and later at Stanford University in California. Matteo got his PhD in Milan in 2011, moved to DAMTP University of Cambridge after winning the “Della Riccia” fellowship, and then started his postdoc in the US. His research is in theoretical cosmology and gravity. Matteo investigates the consistency of early and late-time universe models and studies their signatures in view of current/upcoming observations. Current interests include inflation(-ary particle content), primordial gravitational waves, LSS dynamics, and dark energy.
Welcome to Madrid Matteo! | Paolo Benincasa, a former IFT postdoc in the period 2013-2016, has joined again our institute as an Atracción de Talento Researcher starting September 2020. He comes back after having held a Visiting Researcher position at Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics in Waterloo (Canada, 2017) and an Assistant Professor position at the Niels Bohr International Academy of the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen (Denmark, 2017-2020). His research focuses on theoretical particle physics and cosmology, moving along the edge of these fields as well as of holography and combinatorics, with the aim of understanding the fundamental rules constraining physical processes at ultra-high energies (i.e. much higher than any experiment on Earth and characterizing the early stage of our universe) and their underlying mathematical structures.

Prof. Barry Barish has recently received the Princess of Asturias Award.
His primary research interest has been the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO), since he became Principal Investigator in 1994 and Director in 1997. He led the effort through the final design stages, approval for funding by the NSF National Science Board in 1994, and then the construction and commissioning of the LIGO interferometers in Livingston, LA and Hanford, WA. In 1997, he created the LIGO Scientific Collaboration (LSC), which now enables more than 1000 collaborators world-wide to participate in LIGO. | Prof. Hirosi Ooguri from Caltech & IPMU is visiting the IFT for the period June 21st to 23rd, 2017. Ooguri is a theoretical physicist working on quantum field theory, quantum gravity, and superstring theory. His research strategy is to discover mathematical structures in these theories and to exploit them to invent new theoretical tools to solve fundamental questions in physics.
In particular, he developed the topological string theory to compute Feynman diagrams of superstring theory and used it to solve mysterious quantum mechanical properties of black holes. He also worked on conformal field theory in two dimensions, D branes in Calabi-Yau manifolds, the AdS/CFT correspondence, and properties of supersymmetric field theories and their relation to superstring theory. | Prof. Nima Arkani-Hamed from IAS – Princeton is visiting the IFT for the period June 22nd to 23rd, 2017. One of the leading particle physics phenomenologists of his generation, Nima Arkani-Hamed is concerned with the relation between theory and experiment. His research has shown how the extreme weakness of gravity, relative to other forces of nature, might be explained by the existence of extra dimensions of space, and how the structure of comparatively low-energy physics is constrained within the context of string theory. He was previously a Radboud Excellence Fellow at Radboud University Nijmegen (Netherlands), and held postdoctoral positions at the University of São Paulo (Brazil), and at the University of Oxford (United Kingdom). Dr. Rebecca Collins, Lecturer in Contemporary Art Theory, from the University of Edinburgh is joining the IFT for 12 months from January 2022. Dr. Collins received a prestigious Royal Society of Edinburgh Saltire Early Career Fellowship for her project Parameters for Understanding Uncertainty: Creative Practice and Sonic Detection as Strategies for Scientific Outreach (P4UU). She will be investigating how methodologies used in creative practice meet those in the physical sciences. Working alongside Dr. Cerdeño and his group at the IFT, a central aim of the project is to find innovative approaches to better communicate research processes involving invisible matter. | Sebastian Grieninger obtained his PhD in 2020 from the Friedrich-Schiller University of Jena, Germany under the supervision of Prof. Martin Ammon. During his PhD, he was granted a Fulbright and a DAAD scholarship to visit Prof. Andreas Karch at the University of Washington, Seattle (USA) for 19 months. After his PhD, he was granted a DAAD research grant to join the group of Prof. Anton Rebhan at the Vienna University of Technology in Austria for 6 months.

Prof. Mukhanov holds the Chair of Cosmology at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich. He is one of a select group of researchers who have made significant contributions to the theory of cosmic inflation. In 1980–81, together with G. Chibisov, he discovered that quantum fluctuations could be responsible for the large-scale structure of the universe.
